Why we love Pampa, Texas
Pampa is our kind of town. It is a place where the Harvesters still pack the stands on Friday nights, where the Top o’ Texas Rodeo rolls in every July, and where an old drugstore on South Cuyler Street, the one where a young Woody Guthrie first picked up a guitar, has been kept alive as a folk music center. The grain elevators and pumpjacks around town tell you what built this part of the Panhandle: wheat, cattle, oil, and gas, and plenty of hard work behind all of it.
To appreciate Pampa, it helps to know the history that shaped it, because this town did not happen by accident. From a railroad stop on the open plains to an oil-boom county seat of nearly 17,000 people, Pampa’s story explains a lot about the folks who live there today, and why we are glad to serve them.

Early Settlement
Pampa got its start in 1888, when the Santa Fe Railroad built through the northeastern Panhandle and put a rail station and telegraph office on the open grassland. George Tyng, manager of the vast White Deer Lands ranch, laid out the townsite, and after trying the names Glasgow and Sutton, the town settled on Pampa, after the pampas grasslands of South America that the country here reminded folks of. Timothy Dwight Hobart, the Vermont native whose name is still on Pampa’s main business street, sold town plots only to people who agreed to settle and develop the land. The town voted to incorporate on February 17, 1912, and grew as a center for area agriculture.
Oil Boom and Wheat Country
Pampa’s fortunes changed for good on January 31, 1925, when the Worley-Reynolds #1 well came in as the first oil well in Gray County and set off a boom that brought businesses and new residents pouring into town. In 1927, Godfrey L. Cabot of Boston established the first of several carbon black plants at Pampa, and in 1928 the town won a special election to take over from Lefors as the seat of Gray County. By 1931 Pampa counted 430 businesses and more than 10,000 residents. Through it all, wheat farming stayed at the heart of the local economy, and the White Deer Land Company’s loan program for wheat farmers helped carry the town through the Great Depression.
Community Spirit
You can read Pampa’s farming roots right in its school colors: Pampa ISD’s teams are the Harvesters, and the high school even sits on a street named East Harvester. Every July, the Top o’ Texas Rodeo draws competitors from across Texas and the surrounding states to Gray County. Downtown, the old Harris Drug Store at 320 South Cuyler, where a teenage Woody Guthrie worked the soda fountain and learned his first guitar chords after arriving in 1929, now lives on as the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center, with open jams on Friday evenings. Add the M.K. Brown Auditorium, dedicated in 1972 on West Coronado Drive, and the White Deer Land Museum downtown, and you have a town that takes real care of its own story.
Modern Pampa
Today Pampa is home to about 16,900 people and serves as the seat of Gray County and the hub of a two-county area that includes Roberts County. Oil, natural gas, chemicals, and agriculture still drive the economy, and the town sits at a working crossroads where US-60 meets Texas Highway 70, about 55 miles from Amarillo. People move to Pampa for steady Panhandle jobs, affordable homes, and a community where the school district, the rodeo grounds, and the churches still anchor daily life. It is a genuine small city, big enough to have what you need and small enough that neighbors still know each other.

Pampa, Texas Moving Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!
You're called Lubbock Moving Company — do you really cover Pampa?
We do. Our trucks are based in Lubbock, but our service area covers the South Plains and the Panhandle, and Pampa is a town we know well. The run up I-27 to Amarillo and out US-60 to Pampa is a straight, familiar drive, and we plan it into the schedule so the crew arrives on time with everything needed for the day.
Day to day, that means we book your Pampa move in advance, confirm the details with you by phone, and send a crew that starts early enough to make the trip and still put in a full day’s work. You get the same full-service treatment a customer three blocks from our lot in Lubbock gets, backed by our state and federal operating authority.
Does the drive from Lubbock cost me extra or slow my move down?
Honest answer: Pampa is about a three-hour drive from our lot, so a Pampa move is a scheduled trip rather than a same-day local run we can squeeze in between jobs. We plan it ahead of time, the crew leaves Lubbock early, and the whole day is built around your move so the distance never turns into rushed work at your house.
On cost, everything including travel is figured into one written quote before we start, so there are no surprise add-ons when the truck rolls up on Hobart Street. What we put on paper is what the job is, with no hidden fees, and you will have that quote in hand before you commit to anything.
How far ahead should I book, and can you handle short notice?
For a Pampa move, a week or two of notice is ideal because we schedule the crew and truck for the full day, including the drive up US-60. Summer weekends and the end of the month fill fastest, the same as anywhere, and July gets busy locally when the Top o’ Texas Rodeo has the town full of visitors.
That said, call us even if your timeline is tight. We can often get a Pampa job on the calendar within the same week, and sometimes same-day help is possible for smaller jobs if a crew is free. The sooner you call 806-855-8427, the more options we will have for you.
I'm moving between Pampa and Lubbock — how does that work?
That route is home turf for us, and it is one of the simplest moves we do. Whether you are a Pampa family heading to Lubbock for a job or a Texas Tech connection, or you are leaving Lubbock for work in the Gray County oil and gas fields, one crew handles the whole thing: load at one end, drive the I-27 and US-60 route, and unload at the other, usually all in the same day.
Because we are based at the Lubbock end, there is no coordinating between two companies and no handing your furniture off to a second truck. You get one written quote covering the entire move, one crew responsible for your belongings from door to door, and one phone number, 806-855-8427, if you need anything along the way.
Can you move me from Pampa to somewhere else in Texas, like Dallas or Austin?
Yes. We hold statewide authority through the TXDMV, so we can move you from Pampa to anywhere in Texas: the DFW area, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, or a smaller town nobody outside your family has heard of. Long-distance moves like these are flat-rate, meaning we quote one written price for the whole job before we load, and that number does not creep on you later.
These runs are scheduled trips, so we set the dates with you in advance and plan the route, whether that is US-60 to I-27 and south, or east toward I-40. The same crew that packs and loads you in Pampa delivers and unloads at the other end, so your things stay on one truck with people you have already met.
Are you actually licensed and insured for moves in Pampa?
We are, and we encourage you to check for yourself because plenty of folks with a pickup and a trailer are not. Our Texas license is TXDMV #009155382C and our federal number is USDOT #3426928, both of which you can look up online. That combination covers us for local work in Gray County, statewide moves anywhere in Texas, and interstate authority beyond that.
Insurance matters most on the day something unexpected happens, and it means your belongings are protected by a real, registered carrier rather than someone’s word. Between the licensing, the insurance, and a written estimate before the job starts, you have everything on paper before our truck ever leaves Lubbock for Pampa.
Do your crews really know their way around Pampa?
They do. Pampa is laid out along two main corridors, US-60 running through town and Hobart Street, which is Highway 70, carrying the main business strip north to south, and our crews have worked both. We know to plan around the school zones near the Pampa ISD campuses off Harvester, and that downtown streets like Cuyler around the old Harris Drug Store building are tighter than the wide lots out on North Hobart.
Before your move we confirm the exact address and talk through access: driveway or street parking, alley access, stairs, and anything oversized like a gun safe or piano. A few minutes of planning on the phone means the truck is positioned right the first time and your move does not lose an hour to logistics.
What does full-service actually include, and how do I get a quote?
Full-service means we can handle the whole move or just the parts you want help with. That covers residential and commercial moves, professional packing and unpacking, long-distance flat-rate moves anywhere in Texas, and straight labor help if you already have a truck or container. Our crews bring the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, so you are not renting equipment or hunting down supplies in town.
Getting a quote is one phone call: 806-855-8427. We will ask about your home, your dates, and where you are headed, then put a free written estimate in front of you with everything spelled out and no hidden fees. We take cash and all major credit cards, and once you say go, your Pampa move is on the calendar.
