Our Roots in Slaton, Texas

Why we love Slaton, Texas

We’ll be honest: any excuse to swing by The Slaton Bakery, turning out baked goods on the west side of the square since 1923, is a good day for our crews. Slaton is one of our favorite towns on the South Plains — the old Santa Fe steam engine parked on the town square, the beautifully restored Harvey House depot down on Railroad Avenue, warbirds at the Texas Air Museum out by the airport, and Friday nights when the whole town shows up in red and black for the Slaton Tigers. It’s a railroad town that never stopped taking care of what it built.

To appreciate Slaton, it helps to know the history that shaped it — because this town didn’t grow up by accident. It was laid out on purpose, by a railroad, and that story still shows on every street.

Early Settlement

Slaton was founded by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which purchased the townsite on April 15, 1911, and held its official opening day on June 15, 1911, when the first of four daily passenger trains rolled in. The town was named for O.L. Slaton, a rancher and banker who worked to bring the Santa Fe through this part of the South Plains. The railroad laid out the streets deliberately, with a design patterned after Washington, D.C., which is why downtown Slaton still has its distinctive angled avenues around the square. German immigrant families were among the early settlers, making Slaton the westernmost German settlement in Texas.

Railroad Heritage

Slaton grew fast because the Santa Fe made it a division point, complete with a roundhouse, machine shops, and a two-story freight and passenger depot. The crown jewel was the Harvey House, built in 1912 and designed by architect Louis Curtiss, where the famous Harvey Girls served meals to rail passengers from 1912 to 1942. Around the rails, cotton gins and mills sprang up to handle the local harvest, and by 1931 the town supported 145 commercial establishments. Townspeople saved the Harvey House from demolition in 1989, and the Texas Historical Commission has since named it the state’s 40th official state historic site.

Community Spirit

Slaton ISD’s Tigers and Tigerettes take the field in red and black — colors the district adopted after Texas Tech donated band uniforms to the school, replacing the original purple and white. The Slaton Bakery, formed in 1923 when the Blue Ribbon and City bakeries merged, is one of the oldest operating bakeries in Texas and earned a state historical marker in 2009. The town gathers for the July 4th festival at the city park and, in odd-numbered years, for an air show connected to the Texas Air Museum’s Caprock Chapter at the municipal airport. It’s the kind of place where the landmarks are still in business.

Modern Slaton

Today Slaton is home to roughly 5,900 people, close enough to Lubbock for an easy commute up US-84 but far enough out to keep its own square, its own schools, and its own pace. Cotton and grain agriculture still anchor the local economy, with co-op gins working the harvest just as they have for a century. Families move here for affordable homes with real yards — from the historic houses along West Garza and West Lubbock Streets to newer construction in Century Heights — and for a small-town school district where kids aren’t a number. For a lot of our customers, Slaton is the answer to wanting Lubbock’s jobs without Lubbock’s traffic.

Slaton, Texas Moving Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!

We really do cover Slaton, and it’s our own crews — never a subcontractor — who show up at your door. Slaton is about 17 miles southeast of our home base via US-84, roughly a twenty-minute drive, so it’s part of our regular daily service area rather than some outer edge of the map. Our teams work jobs in Slaton the same way they work jobs in Lubbock: same trucks, same pads and dollies, same free written estimate.

Day to day, that means a crew loads up in Lubbock in the morning, heads down US-84, and is carrying boxes out of your house before most people finish their coffee. You call us directly at (806) 300-7394, and the people you talk to are the same company doing the work.

Not in any way you’ll feel. Slaton is a short, straight shot down US-84 — one of the easiest drives on the South Plains — so the trip to your door doesn’t slow down your moving day. Everything, including travel, is built into the free written estimate we give you before the job starts, so there’s never a surprise line item or a hidden fee tacked on afterward.

For towns much farther out — think 200 miles or more — we’re honest that those become scheduled long-distance, flat-rate moves rather than daily local runs. Slaton isn’t remotely in that category; it’s home territory, and we treat it that way.

The earlier you call, the more choice you’ll have on dates — end-of-month weekends and summer fill up first, just like everywhere in West Texas. That said, we can very often get a Slaton move on the calendar the same week you call, and sometimes even the same day if a crew has an opening. Because you’re only twenty minutes down US-84 from our trucks, fitting in a Slaton job on short notice is a lot easier than it would be for a mover coming from farther away.

If your closing date moved, your lease is up, or plans just changed fast, call us at (806) 300-7394 and we’ll give you a straight answer about what’s available. No runaround — if we can do it, we’ll tell you, and if we can’t, we’ll tell you that too.

It’s about as routine as it gets — the Slaton-to-Lubbock run up US-84 is a corridor our trucks know by heart. A lot of our customers are making exactly this move: folks taking a job in Lubbock, Texas Tech families, or people leaving the city for a quieter street and a bigger lot in Slaton. Most of these moves load and deliver the same day, since the drive between the two towns is only about twenty minutes.

We handle both ends completely — packing if you want it, loading, the drive, and placement in the new house — with one crew and one written price agreed on before we start. Whether you’re leaving a house near the square or landing in one, it’s a single smooth day’s work.

Yes — long-distance moves anywhere in Texas are one of our core services, and we run them on a flat-rate basis. That means we come look at what you’re moving, put a single all-inclusive figure in writing, and that written number is what you pay: no weight tickets, no fuel surcharges appearing later, no hidden fees. We hold both statewide and federal operating authority (TXDMV #009155382C, USDOT #3426928), so we’re fully legal to carry your household from Slaton to any corner of the state.

Your belongings ride on our truck with our crew from your driveway in Slaton to your new front door — they’re not transferred to another carrier along the way. Call (806) 300-7394 and we’ll walk you through dates and put together your written flat-rate quote.

Fully, and we’ll show you the paperwork before you ever have to ask. Lubbock Moving Company operates under TXDMV license #009155382C and USDOT #3426928, which covers both intrastate moves — like Slaton to Lubbock or Slaton to anywhere else in Texas — and federal interstate authority. Insurance rides along with every job, so your household goods are protected from the moment our crew starts wrapping furniture in your living room.

That matters more than people realize, because unlicensed movers with a rented truck are a real problem in West Texas, and if something goes wrong you have no recourse. With us, you can verify both numbers yourself on the TXDMV and FMCSA websites before you sign anything.

Our crews have worked Slaton for years and know it street by street. They’ve carried furniture out of the big historic homes along West Garza and West Lubbock Streets in West Park, delivered to new builds up in Century Heights, and handled plenty of jobs in South Park and South Slaton on either side of 9th Street below Division. They know the angled avenues around the town square — a leftover from the Santa Fe Railway laying the town out like Washington, D.C. — and how to stage a truck downtown without blocking half the block.

That local knowledge shows up in small ways: knowing which older houses have narrow doorways and steep porch steps, where to park on a tight residential street, and the fastest way back onto US-84 when we’re hauling your things to Lubbock or beyond. You won’t be giving directions from your porch.

Full-service means our crew arrives with everything the job requires — the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap — and handles the whole move from there. That covers residential and commercial moves, professional packing and unpacking, flat-rate long-distance anywhere in Texas, and labor-only help if you’ve already rented your own truck and just need strong, careful hands. You don’t rent equipment, you don’t buy supplies for the crew, and you don’t lift the heavy stuff.

Getting a quote is one phone call: (806) 300-7394. We’ll ask about your home, your dates, and what’s moving, then put a free written estimate in front of you — up front, with no hidden fees. We take cash and all major credit cards, and once you’re on the schedule, your crew comes down US-84 ready to work.
