Why we love Plainview, Texas
Plainview is our kind of town. It’s the seat of Hale County, with the courthouse anchoring downtown, the old eight-story Hilton Hotel from 1929 still standing tall over Broadway as the Conrad Lofts, and Wayland Baptist University — home of the famous Flying Queens — giving the town a college heartbeat most communities its size can only envy. It’s where Jimmy Dean grew up, and the museum on the Wayland campus tells that story proudly. Add Friday nights with the Bulldogs and farmland running flat to the horizon in every direction, and you’ve got a town that knows exactly who it is.
To appreciate Plainview, it helps to know the history that shaped it — a story of two settlers, a treeless plain, a railroad, and more than a century of farm families who built something lasting on the High Plains.

Early Settlement
Plainview got its start in 1886, when Z. T. Maxwell moved over from Floyd County with his family and 2,000 sheep, settling near fellow newcomer Edwin Lowden Lowe of Tennessee. Hoping to found a town, the two secured a post office on March 18, 1887, and after the names Runningwater and Hackberry Grove were passed over, they chose Plainview — a plain description of the vast treeless country around them. The town received its charter on July 3, 1888, and became the county seat when Hale County organized that August, beating out nearby Hale Center. Within a few years the young town had churches, hotels, a newspaper, stagecoach service, and a growing cluster of businesses.
Cotton Country Roots
Everything changed when the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway reached town at the end of 1906, with the line dedicated on January 1, 1907. The railroad set off an agricultural boom, and by 1910 Plainview had nearly 3,000 residents and about ninety businesses, including twenty land agencies selling farmland to newcomers. Unlike many South Plains towns, Plainview built its economy almost entirely on agriculture — cotton, grain, and cattle country stretching flat in every direction. That farm-and-ranch backbone even drew hometown star Jimmy Dean back in 1969, when he opened the Jimmy Dean Meat Company here.
Community Spirit
Plainview ISD’s Bulldogs are the heartbeat of fall in Hale County, with the team taking the field at the stadium on West 24th Street and a grey English bulldog named Big Red serving as mascot. Wayland Baptist University adds another layer of pride — its Flying Queens women’s basketball program is one of the most storied in the country, honored with its own museum on campus. The Wayland grounds also hold the Jimmy Dean Museum and the Museum of the Llano Estacado at the Mabee Regional Heritage Center, where you can see the fossilized remains of a Columbian mammoth. This is a town that shows up for its kids, its teams, and its history.
Modern Plainview
Today Plainview is home to around 20,000 people, holding steady as the commercial and civic center of Hale County. The town weathered a hard blow when the Cargill beef plant, then its largest employer, closed in 2013, but Plainview has kept working — education, health care, retail, and agriculture anchor the economy now, with Wayland Baptist and the school district among the biggest employers. Sitting right on I-27 between Lubbock and Amarillo, it offers small-town affordability with an easy drive to two bigger cities. Families keep choosing Plainview for its schools, its low cost of living, and the kind of neighborliness that never went out of style here.

Plainview, Texas Moving Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!
You're called LUBBOCK Moving Company — do you really cover Plainview?
We sure do — Plainview is one of the towns we serve most, because it’s a straight 47-mile run north on I-27 from our home base in Lubbock, about 45 minutes door to door with no back roads and no guesswork. Our crews make that drive all the time, so a Plainview job runs just like a local one for us. On moving day the truck rolls up already stocked with pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, and we get straight to work.
Day to day, that means you get a full crew and truck in Hale County without paying for a big-city outfit to come from farther away. We know the town — Columbia Street, Olton Road, the neighborhoods around Wayland Baptist — so nobody’s wasting your time reading a map.
Does the drive up from Lubbock cost me extra or slow my move down?
No surprises either way. Plainview is close enough that we treat it like everyday service — 45 minutes up I-27 doesn’t eat into your moving day, and the travel is figured into your free written estimate before we ever load a box, so there are no hidden fees tacked on afterward. The quote you sign is the quote you pay.
To be straight with you: for cities 200-plus miles out, we run those as scheduled flat-rate long-distance moves rather than daily local runs. Plainview isn’t one of those — it’s practically in our backyard, and we can usually fit Plainview jobs into the regular weekly schedule.
How far ahead do I need to book my Plainview move? What if I'm in a hurry?
A week or two of notice is comfortable, especially at the end of the month and through the summer, when moving calendars across the South Plains fill up fast. That said, we can often take Plainview jobs same-week, and sometimes even same-day if a crew is free — it never hurts to ask.
The best move is to call (806) 300-7394 as soon as you know your date, even if it’s tentative. We’ll get you a free written estimate, pencil you in, and stay flexible if your closing date or lease slides a few days.
I'm moving between Plainview and Lubbock — how does that work?
That’s the route we run more than any other, and it’s about as easy as moving gets — 47 miles of flat, straight interstate on I-27 between the two towns. One crew handles the whole thing in a single day for most households: load in Plainview in the morning, unload in Lubbock by afternoon, or the other way around.
We move a lot of families trading Hale County for Lubbock jobs, retirees heading the other direction for quieter streets, and students starting at Texas Tech or Wayland Baptist. Since we know the neighborhoods on both ends, your written quote covers the full trip up front with nothing added later.
Can you move me from Plainview to somewhere farther, like Dallas, Austin, or Houston?
Yes — we run flat-rate long-distance moves from Plainview to anywhere in Texas, whether that’s the DFW metroplex, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, or up the road to Amarillo. We hold statewide operating authority through the Texas DMV, so the whole trip is legal, insured, and handled by one crew from your Plainview doorstep to your new one.
You get a written flat-rate quote before the move, so the number doesn’t change no matter what traffic or weather does between here and there. Same truck, same crew, no handing your furniture off to strangers at a warehouse halfway across the state.
Are you actually licensed and insured to handle my move?
Fully — we operate under TXDMV license #009155382C and USDOT #3426928, which gives us both statewide and federal authority. You can look both numbers up yourself on the Texas DMV and federal websites, and we’d encourage you to do exactly that with any mover you’re considering.
Insurance rides along on every job, whether it’s a two-bedroom house near the Hale County Courthouse or a full office move off 5th Street. Plenty of folks around Plainview have been burned by a guy with a borrowed trailer; the license numbers are how you know you won’t be.
Do your movers actually know their way around Plainview?
They do, because they’re up here all the time. Our crews come in on I-27 and know the exits cold — Business I-27 runs right through town on Columbia Street, and US 70 crosses as Olton Road and 5th Street along the south side of downtown. That matters when you’re squeezing a moving truck down a residential block instead of circling and guessing.
We’ve moved families in the Westgate subdivisions out west on Olton Road, in the older homes near the Wayland Baptist campus, and downtown around the Hale County Courthouse and the old Hilton building. When the crew already knows the street, your move starts on time and ends sooner.
What does full-service actually include, and how do I get a quote?
Full-service means we can do as much or as little as you want: residential and commercial moves, packing and unpacking, long-distance flat-rate moves anywhere in Texas, and straight moving labor if you’ve rented your own truck. Every crew brings the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, so nothing gets scratched between your old place and your new one. We take cash and all major credit cards, which keeps paying simple.
Getting a quote is one phone call: (806) 300-7394. Tell us what you’re moving and where it’s going, and we’ll put together a free written estimate — everything in writing up front, with no hidden fees and no pressure.
