Long-Distance Moving From Lubbock to Canyon, Texas
Why we love Canyon, Texas
Canyon is one of our favorite towns to work in, plain and simple. The 1909 Randall County Courthouse anchors a downtown square that’s actually alive, West Texas A&M brings Buffaloes energy and steady new faces every fall, and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum — the oldest and largest history museum in Texas — sits right there on campus. Add Friday nights with the Canyon High Eagles and the rim of Palo Duro Canyon just twelve miles east, and you’ve got a county seat of around 16,000 that punches well above its weight.
To appreciate Canyon, it helps to know the history that shaped it — a story of dugout homesteads, big cattle outfits, and a college town that grew up right at the edge of the second-largest canyon in the country.

Early Settlement
Canyon started with one determined rancher. Lincoln Guy Conner surveyed and settled the site in December 1887, and his dugout served as home, general store, and post office all at once. He laid out the town in the spring of 1889, and when Conner refused to have it named after himself, blacksmith A. L. Hammond suggested Canyon City, after the great Palo Duro Canyon to the east. When Randall County was organized in July 1889, Canyon City won the vote for county seat, and the town shortened its name to Canyon in 1911.
Ranching Heritage
Before there was a town, there were cattle. The T Anchor Ranch took root in Randall County in 1877, when Leigh Dyer — brother-in-law of the famed Charles Goodnight — drove about 400 head to Spring Draw near the junction of Palo Duro and Tierra Blanca creeks. The outfit later made history when sixteen cowboys pushed 10,652 cattle north in what’s remembered as the largest single cattle drive ever recorded. Rail service deepened the town’s role as a trading center, with the Santa Fe’s Llano Estacado line connecting Canyon City to Floydada in 1910, and that cattle-country backbone still shapes the area today.
Community Spirit
Few towns this size have as much going on. Canyon ISD schools rally behind the Canyon High School Eagles, and West Texas A&M — which opened as West Texas State Normal College on forty acres Conner donated, with its first building finished in 1911 — fills the town with Buffaloes maroon every fall. Each summer, the TEXAS Outdoor Musical draws crowds to the Pioneer Amphitheatre in Palo Duro Canyon, where the story of the Panhandle’s early ranchers and farmers plays out under the canyon walls. It’s the kind of place where the whole town shows up for the same things.
Modern Canyon
Today Canyon is home to roughly 16,000 people and serves as both the Randall County seat and a genuine university town. The restored courthouse square is busy with shops and restaurants, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum draws visitors from across the state, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park sits just twelve miles east on the edge of town. Families keep moving in for Canyon ISD schools, the university, and the small-town pace within an easy drive of Amarillo. New homes keep going up in neighborhoods like Hunsley Hills, and we’ve helped plenty of folks carry boxes into them.

Lubbock to Canyon Moving — Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!
You're called LUBBOCK Moving Company — do you really cover Canyon?
We do, and it’s simpler than it sounds. Canyon sits about 105 miles straight up I-27 from our Lubbock base, and our crews make that run regularly — through Plainview and Happy, right off the interstate on the east side of town. Day to day, a Canyon job works just like a Lubbock job: the crew loads the truck in the morning with pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap already on board, and we plan the drive into the schedule so nobody is rushed.
We’ve served the South Plains and Panhandle for more than fifteen years, and towns along the I-27 corridor like Canyon are a routine part of our week, not a special exception.
Does being an hour and a half from Lubbock make my move cost more or take longer?
Honest answer: the drive up I-27 is real, but you’ll never be surprised by it. Every Canyon move starts with a free written estimate, and any travel is built into that quote up front — no hidden fees, no add-ons after the fact. Canyon is close enough that we handle it as regular scheduled service, not the flat-rate long-distance program we use for cities several hundred miles away.
We plan Canyon jobs as dedicated trips, so the crew leaves Lubbock early, arrives ready to work, and your move day runs on the timeline we agreed to in writing.
How far ahead do I need to book, and can you help on short notice?
A week or two of notice gives you the best pick of dates, especially in summer when leases turn over around West Texas A&M and families move before the Canyon ISD school year starts. That said, we can often fit Canyon moves in the same week you call, and sometimes the same day if a truck and crew are open.
The fastest path is a quick call to 806-855-8427 — we’ll check the schedule while you’re on the phone and get your free written estimate started right then.
I'm moving between Canyon and Lubbock — how does that work?
That’s one of the most common runs we make, and it’s usually a one-day job. It’s about 105 miles down I-27, so one crew loads you in Canyon in the morning, drives the hour and a half south, and unloads you in Lubbock the same afternoon — or the reverse if you’re headed north. We know both ends of the route well, from the streets around the West Texas A&M campus to every neighborhood in Lubbock.
We see a lot of these moves tied to Texas Tech and WT — students, faculty, and families trading one college town for the other — and your written quote covers the whole trip up front.
Can you handle a long-distance move from Canyon to somewhere else in Texas?
Yes — we run flat-rate long-distance moves from Canyon to anywhere in Texas, whether that’s Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, or a small town nobody else wants to route a truck to. Flat-rate means your written quote is the number, agreed to before we load the first box, with travel included and no hidden fees.
We hold both statewide and federal operating authority (TXDMV #009155382C, USDOT #3426928), so the same licensed crew that loads you in Canyon delivers you at the other end.
Are you actually licensed and insured for moves in Canyon?
We are, and we’ll show you the paperwork before you ever sign anything. Lubbock Moving Company operates under TXDMV #009155382C for moves anywhere in Texas and USDOT #3426928 for federal authority, and we carry insurance on every job. That matters more than people think — an unlicensed crew with a rented truck leaves you holding the risk if something goes wrong on the drive down I-27.
You can verify both numbers yourself through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and the federal FMCSA database, and we’re happy to walk you through it when you call.
Do your crews actually know their way around Canyon?
They do — Canyon is a regular stop for us, not a dot on a map. Our crews know the difference between backing a truck up to a house in Hunsley Hills, working a student move on the tight streets around the West Texas A&M campus, and loading out of a storefront near the courthouse square downtown. We come in off I-27, and from there it’s familiar ground.
Knowing the town means fewer wasted minutes on move day — the crew shows up knowing where to stage the truck and how to protect your floors and doorframes before the first box moves.
What does full-service actually include, and how do I get a quote?
Full-service means we can do as much or as little as you want: packing and unpacking, loading, transport, and placement in the new home, for houses, apartments, and businesses alike. Every crew brings the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, so there’s nothing for you to rent or borrow, and if you only need muscle we offer labor-only help too. We take cash and all major credit cards.
Getting a quote is easy — call 806-855-8427, tell us what you’re moving and where, and we’ll put together a free written estimate with everything spelled out up front.
