Our Roots in Littlefield, Texas

Why we love Littlefield, Texas

Littlefield is our kind of town. It’s the county seat of Lamb County, the hometown of Waylon Jennings — his name is right there on the water tower — and home to the replica of the 132-foot XIT Ranch windmill, once called the world’s tallest. We like that Littlefield ISD earned an A rating from the Texas Education Agency, that Friday nights still belong to the Wildcats, and that the town keeps reinventing itself: the old denim mill that made fabric for Levi’s now runs as a modern dairy processing plant. Cotton fields, grain elevators, and a working downtown — that’s the South Plains at its best.

To appreciate Littlefield, it helps to know the history that shaped it — a story that starts with one of the largest ranches the world has ever seen.

Early Settlement

Littlefield takes its name from George Washington Littlefield, the cattleman who in 1901 bought the Yellow Houses division of the giant XIT Ranch — more than 312,000 acres spread across Lamb, Hockley, Bailey, and Cochran counties. In 1912 he formed the Littlefield Lands Company to sell portions of that ranchland to farmers, and when the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway opened a station here in 1913, a market town was born. The town incorporated in 1924, and in 1946 Lamb County voters made Littlefield the county seat. The Moderne-style Lamb County Courthouse, finished in 1955 by a Lubbock architecture firm, still anchors the town today.

Cotton and Denim Country

During the 1920s, cotton went from a minor crop to the heart of the Lamb County economy, covering more than 100,000 acres by 1930, and Littlefield grew up around gins, grain elevators, a compress, and cottonseed oil mills. That cotton heritage ran so deep that in 1975 the American Cotton Growers opened a denim mill here that wove West Texas cotton into fabric for Levi’s, becoming the town’s largest private employer for four decades. When the mill closed in 2015, the community didn’t fold — the facility came back to life as Continental Dairy Facilities, a modern milk processing plant that put many of the same folks back to work. Farming, ranching, and hard-won reinvention: that’s the Littlefield economic story.

Community Spirit

Littlefield ISD serves the town from four campuses, carries an A rating from the Texas Education Agency, and generations of families have worn the Wildcat purple with pride at Wildcat Stadium on Friday nights. The town also honors its most famous son, country legend Waylon Jennings, at every turn — his name is painted on the city water tower, a boulevard carries his name, and travelers can stop at the Waylon Jennings RV Park and the small museum his family kept in town. Add in the historical marker and replica of the world’s tallest windmill from the old XIT Ranch, and you get a town that knows exactly who it is.

Modern Littlefield

Today Littlefield is home to roughly 5,900 people, making it the largest town in Lamb County and a genuine hub for the farms and ranches around it. Families move here for the small-town pace, the A-rated schools, and housing that stays within reach, all while keeping Lubbock’s jobs, hospitals, and shopping just 37 miles down US 84. The economy still leans on irrigated cotton, grain, and a growing dairy industry, and downtown along Phelps Avenue keeps the county courthouse, local businesses, and city services close together. It’s the kind of place where a move across town still means waving at people you know.

Littlefield, Texas Moving Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!

We sure do. Littlefield is only about 37 miles northwest of our home base, a straight run up US 84, and it has been part of our regular service area for years. Our crews make that drive routinely, so a Littlefield move gets scheduled just like a Lubbock move — same trucks, same equipment, same folks.

On moving day the crew loads up in Lubbock, heads up the highway, and is knocking on your door in well under an hour. You get a full-service, licensed moving company without needing one headquartered on Phelps Avenue.

Not in any way that will surprise you. Littlefield is close enough that our crews treat it as an easy day trip — US 84 is a fast, four-lane highway, so travel time barely registers in the schedule. Any travel involved is built into your free written estimate before we ever load a box, so the number you approve is the number you pay, with no hidden fees tacked on afterward.

For towns much farther out — 200 miles or more — we’re honest that those run as scheduled long-distance, flat-rate moves rather than daily local runs. Littlefield is nowhere near that category; it’s simply part of our regular South Plains territory.

The more notice you can give us, the more choice you’ll have on dates — ends of the month and summer weekends fill up first out here, especially when Littlefield ISD lets out and families time their moves around the school calendar. A week or two of lead time is usually plenty for a Littlefield move.

That said, life doesn’t always cooperate, and we know it. We can often fit you in the same week you call, and sometimes even the same day if a crew is open. Call (806) 300-7394, tell us your situation, and we’ll shoot you straight about what’s available.

It’s one of the most common moves we do. Plenty of folks trade Littlefield’s small-town pace for a job or school in Lubbock, and plenty go the other direction for Littlefield’s A-rated schools and quieter streets, so our trucks know that stretch of US 84 by heart. It’s an easy highway run with no caprock, no mountain passes, and no city traffic until you’re nearly done.

Because both ends of the move sit inside our everyday territory, we can typically load in one town and unload in the other the same day. One written quote covers the whole job, door to door.

Yes — long-distance moves anywhere in Texas are a core part of what we do, and we hold both statewide and federal operating authority, so the paperwork side is fully covered. Whether you’re headed down US 84 toward the Metroplex or south to Austin or San Antonio, we handle Littlefield-to-anywhere moves on a flat-rate basis.

That flat rate is put in writing before we start, so a long haul across Texas doesn’t turn into a guessing game. The same crew that loads your home in Littlefield delivers it at the other end.

Fully. Lubbock Moving Company operates under TXDMV #009155382C and USDOT #3426928, which means we carry both Texas statewide authority and federal authority, and we’re insured on top of that. You can look both numbers up yourself with the state and federal databases — we encourage it, because plenty of unlicensed outfits work the small towns off Highway 84.

When a crew shows up at your door in Littlefield, you deserve to know they’re legitimate, accountable, and covered. Ours are, on every single job.

They do — after 15-plus years working the South Plains, Littlefield is familiar ground. Our crews know the run up US 84, the junction with US 385, Phelps Avenue through downtown past the Lamb County Courthouse, and the neighborhood streets that fan out toward Wildcat Stadium and Waylon Jennings Boulevard.

That familiarity matters on moving day: knowing where to stage a truck on a narrow residential block, or how to route around downtown, saves real time. You won’t spend your morning giving directions to a lost driver.

Full-service means we can take the whole job off your hands: packing and unpacking, loading, transport, and placement in your new home, whether it’s a house in Littlefield, a business near the highway, or a long-distance move anywhere in Texas. The crew brings the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, and if you only need muscle, we offer moving labor help too. We take cash and all major credit cards.

Getting a quote is simple: call (806) 300-7394, tell us what’s moving and where, and we’ll put a free written estimate in your hands — up front, with no hidden fees.
