Our Roots in Seminole, Texas

Why we love Seminole, Texas

Seminole is our kind of town. It’s the seat of Gaines County, one of the top cotton-producing counties in the entire state, with oil pumpjacks working the same ground the Seminole Pool opened up back in 1936. Three US highways — 62, 180, and 385 — meet right in the middle of town, the Gaines County Courthouse anchors the square, and on Friday nights the whole town pulls for the Seminole High School Indians. Add in the Mennonite farm families who have made Gaines County home since the late 1970s, and you get a community that works hard and takes care of its own.

To appreciate Seminole, it helps to know the history that shaped it — a story of scouts and shallow water wells, ranchers and railheads that never came, and the cotton and crude that built one of the steadiest small towns in West Texas.

Early Settlement

Gaines County was carved out of the old Bexar District by the Texas legislature in 1876, but for decades it belonged to buffalo hunters and a handful of ranchers — C. C. Meddin, who brought his family and herd in 1880, is counted as the first permanent settler. The town itself got its start in 1905, when W. B. Austin opened a post office in his store and a group of investors donated land for a county seat; lots went on sale in 1906 and a wooden courthouse went up that same year. The name honors the Black Seminole scouts whose expeditions crossed this country in the 1870s and found more than fifty shallow water wells in a draw just south of the present townsite — a spot still known as Seminole Draw.

Oil and Cotton Country

Seminole’s economy has always run on what comes out of the ground. In 1936 drillers struck the Seminole Pool at around 5,000 to 6,000 feet, and the oil boom that followed pushed Gaines County’s population to more than 8,000 by 1940. Farming grew right alongside the derricks: by the mid-1970s the county had over a thousand cotton farms plus feed grain, wheat, and peanut operations, and today Gaines County ranks among the very top cotton-producing counties in Texas. That mix of oil and agriculture still defines the town — you can see pumpjacks and cotton rows from the same stretch of highway.

Community Spirit

Seminole rallies around its schools and its land. Seminole ISD’s teams have been the Indians since students picked the mascot back in 1949, and home games at Seminole High School are a town-wide event. Each year the Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce puts on the Gaines County Ag & Oil Appreciation Day at the Gaines County Civic Building on NW 5th Street, a nod to the two industries that keep the town running. Between City Park, S.S. Forrest Park, Gaines County Park, and the county golf course, there’s more going on here than passers-through on US 385 ever realize.

Modern Seminole

Today Seminole is home to right around 7,000 people, making it the largest town in Gaines County and the center of commerce for the surrounding farms and oil leases. Since the late 1970s, Low German-speaking Mennonite families — the first hundred of whom gained citizenship under legislation signed in 1980 — have settled and farmed the land around town, and their community now numbers in the thousands. People move to Seminole for steady work in oil and agriculture, for the schools, and for the kind of quiet, affordable small-town life that’s getting harder to find. It’s a working town with deep roots, and it keeps drawing new families in.

Seminole, Texas Moving Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few answers to common questions we get from our customers. If you have any more questions — don’t hesitate to give us a call!

We do, and we’re out your way regularly. Seminole sits about 80 miles southwest of Lubbock, an easy run down US 62/82 to Brownfield and then US 385 south through Seagraves, and Gaines County has been part of our service area for years. On moving day the crew leaves Lubbock early with the truck fully loaded with pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap, so we pull up to your door ready to start work.

Day to day it works just like hiring a hometown mover: you call (806) 300-7394, we put together a free written estimate, and we schedule your date. The only difference is our trucks are based in Lubbock — the service, and the crew that knows Seminole, come to you.

It doesn’t slow anything down — Seminole is a comfortable morning drive on flat, straight West Texas highway, and our crews make that Brownfield-to-Seagraves stretch of US 385 routinely. We plan the schedule around the drive, so the crew arrives fresh and your move takes the same day it would if we were parked around the corner.

As for cost, everything including travel is built into your free written estimate before we ever load a box, so there are no hidden fees and no surprise add-ons. Towns much farther out — 200 miles or more — are handled a little differently, as scheduled long-distance flat-rate moves rather than daily local runs, but Seminole is well inside our regular range.

A week or two of lead time is ideal, especially at the start and end of the month or during the summer rush when families try to move between school years. That said, we can often fit Seminole jobs in the same week you call, and sometimes even the same day if a crew and truck are open.

If oilfield work has you relocating on short notice — and in Gaines County that happens a lot — call us at (806) 300-7394 and tell us your timeline. We’ll be straight with you about what we can do, and if we can make it work, we will.

That’s one of the most common moves we do, and it’s about the simplest route on the South Plains: US 385 north through Seagraves to Brownfield, then US 62/82 straight into Lubbock. The crew loads your home in Seminole in the morning, makes the drive, and unloads at your new place the same day.

Because we’re based in Lubbock, we know the neighborhoods on the receiving end too — from Tech Terrace to the newer developments out southwest — so there’s no fumbling around on delivery. One written quote covers the whole job, both ends and the road in between.

Yes — we run long-distance moves from Seminole to anywhere in the state on a flat-rate basis. That means one written price for the whole move, agreed on before we load, whether you’re headed to Midland, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, or a small town nobody outside Texas has heard of.

Long-distance jobs are scheduled in advance so we can dedicate a truck and crew to your move from door to door. We hold statewide operating authority through the TXDMV and federal authority through the USDOT, so wherever in Texas life takes you from Gaines County, we’re legal and equipped to get you there.

Fully. Lubbock Moving Company operates under TXDMV license #009155382C and USDOT #3426928, which covers every move we do in Seminole and across Texas, plus federal interstate authority. You can look both numbers up yourself with the state and federal databases — we encourage it, because plenty of unlicensed outfits work the oil patch towns.

Being licensed and insured means your belongings are protected the whole way, from your driveway in Seminole to wherever you’re headed. We’ve carried that authority through more than 15 years of serving the South Plains, and we put it in writing on every estimate.

They do — Seminole isn’t a dot on the map to us, it’s a town we work in. Our crews know that US 62, 180, and 385 all come together right in the middle of town, how Main Street runs through the business district, and where the courthouse square sits, so routing a 26-foot truck through Seminole is second nature.

We’ve loaded and delivered all over town, from the streets around Seminole High School to homes out by Gaines County Park and the farms and Mennonite country outside the city limits. If your place is down a caliche road off the highway, that’s fine too — we move plenty of rural Gaines County households.

Full-service means we can handle the entire move: packing and unpacking, loading, transport, and placement in your new home, with the crew supplying the truck, furniture pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap. We handle residential and commercial moves, long-distance flat-rate moves anywhere in Texas, and plain moving labor if you’ve already got a truck and just need muscle.

Getting a quote is easy: call (806) 300-7394 and tell us what you’re moving and when. We’ll give you a free written estimate up front with no hidden fees, and we accept cash and all major credit cards, so paying is as simple as the rest of it.
